Women molested in a party at a Popular five-star hotel; Two Arrested

On Tuesday night, a woman was allegedly molested while attending a party at a popular five-star hotel in Kolkata. Police have arrested two people in connection with the murder, one of them is a Delhi resident.

The arrests were made in response to the survivor’s allegation, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered. The police have launched an inquiry into the situation, and additional investigations are presently underway.

The incident occurred during a crucial legislative action in the West Bengal Assembly, where the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill, 2024 tabled on Tuesday.

The measure, tabled by Mamata Banerjee’s government, seeks the death sentence for rape convictions in circumstances when the assault kills the victim or renders her vegetative. This legislative move follows widespread indignation over the violent rape and death of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month.

With the passage of this bill, West Bengal became the first state to change central legislation governing rape, gang-rape, and sexual crimes against children, demonstrating its commitment to harsher punishment for such horrible crimes.
