At least 15 people in Telangana and 12 in Andhra Pradesh have lost their lives as rivers in both states remained in spate on Sunday. Thousands of residents have been evacuated from flooded areas by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), with many relocated to relief camps.
Heavy rains have caused massive disruption, leading to the cancellation of over 100 trains, while others have been diverted due to waterlogging on tracks across the South Central Railway network, which serves both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, assuring them of all possible support from the Centre to handle the crisis.
The Indian Meteorological Department issued a red alert for several districts in Telangana, including Adilabad, Nizamabad, and Vikarabad, warning of extremely heavy rains on Monday. Hyderabad, already grappling with waterlogged streets, declared a holiday for schools as a precautionary measure.
In Andhra Pradesh, Vijayawada has been severely affected, with flooding reported in several areas after the Budameru rivulet overflowed. Chief Minister Naidu, in his second visit to the affected Ajit Singh Nagar, personally distributed food to victims. Several other districts, including Srikakulam and Vijayanagaram, are also expected to experience heavy rainfall on Monday.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary and instructed officials to stay on high alert to provide immediate relief.
