Anurag Kashyap Calls Hindi Film Industry ‘Toxic’

Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has confirmed his relocation to South India, citing dissatisfaction with the current state of the Hindi film industry. According to sources, Kashyap is likely to settle in Bangalore.

Expressing his concerns, Anurag said, “I want to stay away from film people. The industry has become too toxic. Everyone is chasing unrealistic targets, trying to make the next ₹500 or ₹800 crore film. The creative atmosphere is gone.”

Earlier, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the filmmaker shared his frustration, revealing that he felt “disgusted” and “disappointed” with the Hindi film industry. Kashyap admired the creative freedom of South Indian filmmakers, saying, “I envy them. It’s difficult for me to experiment now because it’s all about profit margins. The joy of filmmaking is sucked out.”

The filmmaker, known for his unconventional storytelling, has decided to move out of Mumbai by next year to find a more “stimulative” creative environment.

Currently, Kashyap is promoting the Malayalam film Footage, directed by Saiju Sreedharan. The film, starring Manju Warrier, Vishak Nair, and Gayathri Ashok, was released in August 2024. Its Hindi version is set to release on March 7, 2025.

In addition to his production ventures, Anurag will soon be seen on screen in the upcoming film Dacoit. The bilingual project, shot in Hindi and Telugu, also stars Adivi Sesh and Mrunal Thakur. The release date for Dacoit is yet to be announced.
