Bengal Government Seeks Revival of Direct Flights to Europe and America

A resolution demanding direct flights from Kolkata to the United States and Europe is set to be presented by the West Bengal government in the state Assembly during the ongoing winter session. The motion under Rule 185 is aimed at pressuring the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation and private airlines to enhance Kolkata’s global connectivity.

State Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya noted that while Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport was once a hub for direct flights to Europe and the US, these operations were gradually discontinued. She emphasized that although global recognition for the airport has grown, the absence of such flights diminishes its international stature.

It was highlighted by Bhattacharya that increasing international flights would significantly boost Bengal’s tourism industry. Additionally, it was confirmed by officials that Kolkata Airport’s facilities are being upgraded to support the addition of more international routes.

The airport, which made headlines on October 8 by being the first in eastern India to host the Beluga XL aircraft, was chosen for its advanced infrastructure and technical capabilities. However, the absence of direct flights remains a concern.

Direct flights to London were last operated by Air India on March 20, 2022, before being discontinued. Despite improved passenger loads in recent years, Kolkata remains without a direct European connection. The proposed resolution aims to address this gap and reestablish the city’s global air linkages. Director of Kolkata Airport, Dr. Pravat Ranjan Beuria, stated that while he was unaware of the motion, its implementation would be a positive development.
