Bill Skarsgård has expressed a strong interest in playing the Joker, revealing that he believes he has a “pretty cool” take on the iconic DC villain. During a conversation with Josh Horowitz, the actor shared his admiration for the role, admitting that he has always been drawn to underdog antagonists in the DC universe.
Expanding on his thoughts, Skarsgård confidently stated, “There’s a pretty cool Joker in me, and it would be very sick.” When asked whether he would prefer to play Batman or the Joker, he surprised listeners by suggesting he could potentially take on both roles. “Maybe both. I can be sort of schizophrenic… Batman is Joker and Joker is Batman,” he said, referencing the challenge of actors playing dual roles, such as twins. However, he acknowledged the logistical difficulty of switching between characters during filming.
Continuing the discussion, Skarsgård reiterated his belief that he has a Joker within him, saying, “I do believe there could be a fcking Joker in me somewhere. I think that could be pretty sick.”*
When asked about his favorite Joker portrayal, the It star praised Heath Ledger’s performance, saying that he felt the late actor truly did justice to the role. He also admitted that Ledger’s passing deeply affected him.
Skarsgård also reflected on his preference for playing complex, morally ambiguous characters. “I’ve always been drawn to anti-heroes. There’s no perfection in playing a protagonist. What’s fcked up, complicated, and messy is what challenges me, and I instinctively go for that,”* he explained.
As for what’s next, Skarsgård is set to appear in the upcoming TV series It: Welcome to Derry.
