DC’s Clayface: Kick-Ass 2’s Jeff Wadlow And Eden Lake’s James Watkins Are In Race To Grab Director’s Seat

DC Studios is gearing up for its next big project with Clayface, following the success of Creature Commandos and the upcoming Superman film. The studio is set to audition directors for the movie, with key candidates being Jeff Waldow (known for Truth or Dare) and James Watkins (Speak No Evil). Both filmmakers will present their pitches to DC brass in the coming week.

The screenplay for Clayface is already in the hands of Mike Flanagan, a well-respected horror director, who is known for films like The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep. However, despite his involvement in the writing, Flanagan won’t be directing the film due to prior commitments, including working on the Exorcist reboot. The film is currently set for release on September 11, 2026.

Once a director is chosen, DC Studios will begin casting, looking for actors who fit both the script and the vision of the director. The director will also play a key role in selecting the cast, ensuring the actors align with their creative direction.

The film will be produced by James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Matt Reeves—the latter bringing his expertise from The Batman (2022) and adding another layer of excitement to the project. Lynn Harris will also be involved in the production process, with Chantal Nong serving as the executive producer.

In terms of genre, Clayface will be a horror-thriller-tragedy, with the protagonist being portrayed not as a villain, but as a tragic character. This could mark a significant shift in how Clayface is depicted, focusing on his internal struggle and perhaps exploring his darker backstory in a more nuanced way. Fans of DC are eagerly awaiting more updates as this intriguing project takes shape!
