Did Hulu Cancel How To Die Alone Starring Natasha Rothwell After Its Season 1?

Looks like How to Die Alone has reached the end of its road on Hulu. The streaming service has officially pulled the plug on the show, canceling it after just one season. The news, first reported by Variety, comes only a few months after the show wrapped up its debut run.

It’s been over four months since How to Die Alone dropped its eight-episode first season on Hulu. The series was created by actress and writer Natasha Rothwell, who also played the lead role. It was produced by Onyx Collective, a content brand under Disney, just like Hulu.

The show followed Melissa, played by Rothwell, a struggling Black woman working at JFK Airport. After a brush with death, she decides to take control of her life, embarking on a journey of self-empowerment and transformation. The cast also included familiar faces like The White Lotus actress Elle Lorraine, Jocko Sims, KeiLyn Durrell, Conrad Ricamora, Jalee Hamidi, Chris Powell, Arkie Kandola, and more.

Following the cancellation, Rothwell took to Instagram to share her thoughts. She posted a screenshot of Variety’s report, admitting she was struggling to process the news. In her caption, she poured her heart out, saying it was tough to accept and expressing deep appreciation for the cast, crew, and writers who poured their souls into telling this story. She thanked fans for their love and support, hoping this setback was just a “comma” in HTDA’s journey—not the end of the story.

In an official statement to Variety, Rothwell didn’t hold back her emotions. She described herself as “shocked, heartbroken, and frankly, baffled” by Onyx Collective’s decision not to move forward with a second season. However, she made it clear that she and her team weren’t giving up just yet. They are determined to find a new home for How to Die Alone, because, as she put it, stories like this matter. She ended on a defiant, hopeful note: “We are rising. And we are not done.”
