Director Kiran Rao hopes Laapataa Ladies get selected for India’s official Oscar nomination

In 2010, Kiran Rao made her feature film debut directing her first film, Dhobi Ghat, demonstrating her talent. She repeated the feat with her 2024 comedy-drama Laapataa Ladies, years later.

When the film debuted on OTT, it immediately became popular. Rao believes that her second film endeavour should be recognised as India’s official Oscar nomination, given the support and affection it is receiving. In a PTI interview, Kiran Rao expressed her wish that Laapataa Ladies may be chosen as the Indian film to be entered in the 2025 Academy Awards.

“If it went (to the Oscars), my dream would be fulfilled,” she said. The director did, however, also note that it’s a process and that she hopes her picture will be taken into consideration. Having said that, she went on to say that she was confident the finest movie will be selected, regardless of who the Film Federation of India (FFI) ultimately decided upon.

The film features Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta, Abhay Dubey, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan and is produced by Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and Jyoti Deshpande. Shortly after being well-liked by moviegoers, the Supreme Court’s Communication Division watched the film on August 9. A few Supreme Court justices, their partners, and registry participants were treated to a special showing of the performance.

It was also screened in September 2023 at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) of that same year. For those who don’t know, the film centres on two brides who switch places on their way to their husbands’ houses. As they make their way back to their original residences, they discover a number of new aspects about society and themselves.
