Drew Barrymore admits that she’s been asked to stop touching people — while touching ‘Wicked’ royalty

Drew Barrymore’s touchy-feely interview style on The Drew Barrymore Show has garnered both attention and mixed reactions. As the show enters its fifth season, Barrymore’s warm approach of frequently hugging, touching, or holding hands with her guests has sparked discussions about personal space. While most of her guests seem unbothered by her affectionate gestures, Martha Stewart playfully voiced her discomfort, prompting Barrymore to acknowledge the criticism and vow to “practice physical distance” for the upcoming season. However, Barrymore confessed to Dax Shepard that she feels embarrassed by such feedback but struggles to stop her naturally affectionate behavior.

The topic came up again in a recent episode with Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, who shared her own perspective on physical touch. Barrymore commented on the visible connection between Erivo and her Wicked co-star Ariana Grande, asking if Grande was “touchy.” Erivo confirmed, and Barrymore, in a moment of self-awareness, admitted that she had been told to “back off a little bit” but couldn’t help herself. Erivo, who describes herself as a “welcoming Capricorn,” reassured Barrymore that physical touch didn’t bother her and added, “You can touch.”

Erivo further reflected on how physical touch can transcend romantic boundaries, explaining that some people mistakenly see it only as a romantic gesture. Barrymore resonated with this, noting that she feels a deep need for physical connection, especially since she’s not in a romantic relationship. The conversation deepened as Erivo described her non-verbal communication with Grande during the Wicked press tour, where the two would often hold hands or squeeze each other to convey messages. Both Erivo and Barrymore agreed on the importance of physical connection in friendships, with Barrymore expressing a desire for a world where people are more comfortable with touch.

Erivo and Grande, who have frequently been seen holding hands and sharing light physical gestures, will return in Wicked: For Good, set to release in theaters on Nov. 21, 2025.
