Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell seemed to come from two separate worlds in the early 1990s. Madonna was a star at the peak of her career. She went on her successful “Blond Ambition World Tour” and had a big hit with “Vogue.”
O’Donnell began acting while performing stand-up comedy. This was before she had her own talk show or became a co-host on The View. Her film debut happened in 1991 when Penny Marshall cast her in A League Of Their Own. However, it was on the set of this film when Madonna and O’Donnell’s worlds collided.
As it turned out, they became friends and found that they had a lot in common. Their bond has been so strong that the two are still in contact today.
Here’s everything you need to know about Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell’s friendship.
Madonna and Rosie met while working on ‘A League Of Their Own’
Madonna was promoting her documentary Truth or Dare in 1991, which followed her 1990 “Blond Ambition World Tour.” During the film’s promotion, Madonna stated that she wished to go deeper into acting.
Penny Marshall, the director, met with Madonna to talk about A League of Their Own after hearing she wanted to focus on acting. Marshall discussed the role of Mae Mordabito, one of the Rockford Peaches, with Madonna.
Madonna met O’Donnell, who portrayed Mae’s friend Doris in the role. O’Donnell has since talked about her nervousness before meeting Madonna.
“For 30-something years. I didn’t have any idea that I would be meeting her,” O’Donnell said to The Hollywood Reporter. She added, “I was in baseball rehearsals for A League of Their Own. And Penny Marshall called me into the office and said (Penny Marshall voice), ‘Madonna’s going to come to audition. If she likes you, and she likes me, maybe she’ll do the movie. Don’t be nervous.’ I’m like, ‘Don’t be nervous? What do you say to her? How do you connect to her?'”
O’Donnell said that the two became close since they both lost their moms when they were young.
In real life, the two became good friends and have remained such to this day.
“It’s been a really, really, really grueling shoot, but I have learned a lot and I’ve made some really good friends,” Madonna stated at the time. “I think probably friends for life, a couple of the girls.”
