Fog Disrupts Flight Operations; Kolkata Airport Prepares for Winter Challenges

As winter descends, the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport braces for disruptions caused by dense fog. Reduced visibility frequently delays morning flights, triggering a ripple effect that disrupts airline schedules throughout the day.

To address this, airport authorities are implementing Low Visibility Procedures (LVP), activated when visibility falls below 800 meters or the cloud ceiling drops below 200 feet. Dr. Pravat Ranjan Beuria, NSCBI Airport Director, explained that LVP ensures safe operations by coordinating airport operators, air traffic controllers, and pilots. “With advanced Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and ground lighting, aircraft can land, taxi, and take off safely even in poor visibility,” he said.

The airport is equipped with CAT III-B ILS, enabling landings with a Runway Visual Range (RVR) of up to 50 meters. Special arrangements, including additional seating and stocked food outlets, will assist stranded passengers during delays.Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu has urged airlines to inform passengers of delays proactively and ensure fully staffed check-in counters.

IndiGo, a leading low-cost carrier, has announced measures to tackle fog-induced disruptions. It plans to deploy specially trained Low Visibility Operations (LVO) crew for fog-prone flights and position crew near airports to mitigate transportation delays. Pre-arranged accommodations will ensure immediate availability when conditions improve.

Despite challenges, authorities are optimistic that with robust systems and proactive measures, flight disruptions can be minimised this winter season.
