Frankie Muniz is beyond excited to step back into the role that made him a household name—Malcolm! After years of speculation and behind-the-scenes discussions, Disney+ has officially announced a Malcolm in the Middle revival, bringing back Muniz alongside Bryan Cranston (Hal) and Jane Kaczmarek (Lois) for a special four-episode event. The revival, set to celebrate the sitcom’s 25th anniversary, is a dream come true for longtime fans and the cast alike.
Muniz recently opened up about the long road to making this reboot a reality. He revealed that the idea had been floating around for about a decade, with him and Cranston working quietly behind the scenes to get the project off the ground. Now that it’s finally happening, he couldn’t be happier. “We started talking about [a reboot] literally 10 years ago—me and Bryan Cranston—and we’ve slowly been working on it, and it’s finally a reality. So I’m really excited,” Muniz told People.
Revisiting Malcolm in the Middle wasn’t just a walk down memory lane—it also involved some new experiences. Muniz shared that he had to go through chemistry reads for the revival. While he remained tight-lipped about the details, he hinted that new characters would be joining the mix. He described the experience as surreal, being back in the same creative space with Linwood Boomer, the show’s creator, and Ken Kwapis, the director.
Interestingly, Muniz also had a surprising realization when he rewatched the original series with his wife, Paige, about eight years ago. “Malcolm sucked,” he admitted, laughing. “He was the worst character on that show!” Despite the character’s flaws, Muniz is excited to revisit Malcolm’s world—only this time, from a new perspective.
The revival will explore Malcolm’s life as an adult, now married with a daughter of his own. But growing up doesn’t mean he’s escaped his chaotic family. In true Malcolm in the Middle fashion, he finds himself sucked back into the madness when his parents, Hal and Lois, prepare for their 40th wedding anniversary.
Despite the years that have passed, Muniz found slipping back into Malcolm’s shoes surprisingly natural. “Oddly, it was right at home,” he said.
Originally premiering in 2000, Malcolm in the Middle was a trailblazer in the world of single-camera sitcoms, blending sharp comedy with heartfelt coming-of-age moments. Now, 25 years later, the revival promises to bring back the same offbeat humor, family dysfunction, and nostalgia that made the show a classic.
Disney+ will stream the highly anticipated Malcolm in the Middle revival, with Muniz, Cranston, and Kaczmarek reprising their iconic roles. Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see what Malcolm and the rest of the family have been up to all these years.
