A wedding in Hamidpur village, Chandauli district, Uttar Pradesh, was turned into a nightmare when the groom left the ceremony because the food was not served promptly. The bride was devastated by the strange incident, waiting at the location in her bridal gown, while the groom allegedly wed someone else soon after.
On December 22, the wedding, which had been planned seven months earlier, started with customary festivities. The baraatis, or groom’s wedding party, were cordially welcomed by the bride’s family with sweets before dinner was served.
Tensions, however, increased after a member of the groom’s party claimed that the hosts had delayed the rotis’ serving. Attempts to calm the restless groom and his family members were unsuccessful as they became more antagonistic. When the groom, who was named as Mehtab, vanished throughout the night, things got worse.
According to reports, he immediately wed a relative, humiliating the woman and her family. The bride’s family was devastated by the situation and filed a complaint with the Industrial Nagar Police Station.
On December 24, they brought the issue to the attention of the Superintendent of Police (SP) after no action was done. The bride’s family reported a financial loss of ₹7 lakh, including ₹1.5 lakh offered as dowry. The bride has encouraged authorities to take legal action and asked that a formal complaint be filed against five members of the groom’s family.
The bride’s brother, Raju, criticised the police for their inaction despite the SP’s assurances. He was disappointed by the authorities’ lack of response, especially in light of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s plans to set up women’s help desks in police stations for quick grievance resolution.
This upsetting incident not only highlights the financial and emotional abuse that the bride’s family has experienced, but it also highlights the carelessness with which women’s grievances are handled.
