In a heartfelt interview with Interview magazine, Selena Gomez and her fiancé, Benny Blanco, shared the sweet and serendipitous story of how they first met, which was thanks to Gomez’s mom, Mandy Teefey. The couple, who got engaged in December 2024, opened up about how their relationship blossomed over the years, long before they became romantically involved.
Gomez revealed that she first met Blanco when she was around 16 or 17 years old, with her mom setting up their initial meeting. At that time, Gomez wasn’t yet a singer, and Blanco was just beginning his rise in the music industry. “We first had music come out in 2013 or something,” Blanco recalled. During this time, Gomez was under the management of Mandy and her stepfather, Brian Teefey, who had supported her career as she grew into a Disney Channel star.
Blanco also shared his admiration for Gomez’s music from the start, admitting he was drawn to her early work. “I was so into it. I feel like she was the original sad girl,” he said, referring to her unique sound that stood out among the pop music trends of the time. “Everyone was like [beatboxes] and she was like, [sings] ‘I just want to look good for you.’ [Laughs]”
Their deeper connection started to develop when they began collaborating musically. Gomez shared that she began developing feelings for Blanco while they were working together on a song. “It was really simple,” she said, explaining how their chemistry grew naturally through their conversations in the studio. She confessed she liked him before he realized she was interested in him.
Blanco admitted that he didn’t realize Gomez’s feelings at first, even suggesting he introduce her to his friends. However, everything clicked for him on their second date. “The second we started hanging out, I was like, ‘This is my wife,’” Blanco revealed.
Describing Gomez as his best friend, Blanco couldn’t help but gush about how perfect they are for each other. In December 2023, Gomez confirmed their relationship in a sweet post, saying, “He is my absolute everything in my heart.”
The couple made their public debut at the 2024 Emmys, having previously collaborated on Gomez’s 2019 track I Can’t Get Enough. They officially began dating in June 2023, and their highly anticipated collaborative album, I Said I Love You First, is set to be released on March 21, 2025.
