A Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is officially in the works at Hulu, almost 30 years after the original series first aired. The project is moving toward a pilot order, and it’s generating significant buzz thanks to its impressive creative team. Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao is set to direct, and original star Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning as an executive producer, adding her voice and influence behind the scenes.
One of the most unexpected and intriguing additions to the reboot is country music legend Dolly Parton, who will also serve as an executive producer. Fans might be surprised to learn that Parton had an uncredited producer role in both the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and the 1992 film. In a 2023 interview, she revealed that while she never visited the set or met the cast, she played a behind-the-scenes role in bringing the franchise to life.
However, one notable figure will not be involved in this reboot: Joss Whedon, the original series creator. Whedon has faced multiple allegations of workplace misconduct, including accusations from Justice League actor Ray Fisher and Buffy alum Charisma Carpenter. Several other former cast members have backed up these claims, leading Hulu to proceed without Whedon’s involvement.
Although it’s still unclear if any of the original Buffy cast members will reprise their roles, the reboot’s powerhouse team—featuring Zhao, Gellar, and Parton—has fans excited for a fresh take on the iconic supernatural series. As the project nears its pilot order, anticipation continues to build, with many eager to see how this new chapter will shape the vampire-slaying universe.
