Is Greta Gerwig’s Narnia reboot releasing in 2026?

Netflix is gearing up to release Greta Gerwig’s much-anticipated adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia in December 2026, according to reports from Bloomberg. While the final details are still being finalized, the streaming giant is eager to bring the iconic fantasy series to life on screen. Netflix acquired the rights to all seven of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books in 2018, but it wasn’t until 2023 that the project gained major traction with Gerwig attached as both the writer and director. This announcement came shortly after the global success of her Barbie film, which became a cultural phenomenon.

Gerwig’s involvement has added to the excitement surrounding the project. Actor Jason Isaacs accidentally revealed a significant detail about Gerwig’s adaptation during an interview with The Week, hinting that the director might be working on The Magician’s Nephew, a prequel to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Isaacs shared his love for the Narnia books, mentioning, “I loved all the Narnia books as a kid… Greta Gerwig is about to make a film of it, which I can’t wait to see.”

In addition to the film’s development, there are talks of a theatrical release, including potential IMAX screenings, though negotiations are still underway. Gerwig is reportedly pushing for a wide theatrical release before the movie hits streaming platforms, but Netflix has been cautious about committing to expensive theatrical deals, with IMAX also wary of ensuring the film meets its high standards.

Netflix’s upcoming adaptation will be the first to tackle all seven books, whereas previous Narnia movies produced by Disney and Walden Media covered only three: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), Prince Caspian (2008), and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010).

With the entire Narnia series offering rich and varied adventures, Gerwig’s reboot is poised to become a major franchise. Fans can look forward to exploring the world of Narnia again, with updates and more news to come. In the meantime, those who want to revisit the original Narnia films can stream them on Hulu, Disney+, and Max.
