DC Studios co-head James Gunn is hyped about the start of filming for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with House of the Dragon breakout star Milly Alcock stepping into the iconic role. Gunn took to social media to share the exciting update, posting a teaser image of Alcock sitting in a director’s chair proudly featuring the classic Supergirl emblem.
“Thrilled to see cameras roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl,” Gunn wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He praised director Craig Gillespie for bringing a unique “sensibility” to the film’s narrative and highlighted Alcock’s fresh and distinctive take on Kara Zor-El, a version inspired by the vision of comic book creators Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and screenwriter Ana Nogueira.
The film is an adaptation of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Tom King’s 2022 comic series, illustrated by Evely and now reimagined for the big screen by Nogueira. The story follows Kara Zor-El on a revenge-fueled journey across the cosmos after her father is brutally murdered by Krem of the Yellow Hills. She’s not alone—accompanying her is Ruthye Mary Knolle, a noble warrior who aids her in tracking down Krem and exacting justice.
Alcock, who will bring this fierce and vengeful version of Supergirl to life, celebrated the milestone by reposting Gunn’s picture on Instagram with the caption, “Introducing Kara.”
According to the official synopsis, this adaptation will explore the grittier and more tragic origins of Supergirl before she ever arrives on Earth. Alongside Alcock, the film features 3 Body Problem actress Eve Ridley as Ruthye and Rust and Bone star Matthias Schoenaerts as the villainous Krem.
Gunn also revealed on Threads that Alcock had been his top pick for the role from the start. “Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter (Safran) for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics,” he shared, emphasizing just how much faith he has in her ability to bring this version of Supergirl to life.
With an all-star cast, an emotionally intense storyline, and a visually stunning cosmic setting, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is shaping up to be one of DC Studios’ most ambitious projects yet.
