Julia Stiles has shared that Julia Roberts is one of her biggest role models, especially after their experience working together on the 2003 film Mona Lisa Smile. Stiles, known for her role in 10 Things I Hate About You, recalled how Roberts’ motherly instincts stood out to her on set. In an interview on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Stiles praised Roberts for her kindness and generosity, noting how she went out of her way to care for all the young actresses, even though she didn’t have to.
Stiles emphasized that while the success of the film largely rested on Roberts’ performance as Katherine Watson, a teacher at an all-female college challenging societal norms, Roberts still made time to nurture and support her co-stars. Stiles played Joan Brandwyn in the movie, and she appreciated Roberts’ role in making the set feel like a supportive environment, saying, “She took the time to be really kind and generous to all the young women that were in it.”
In addition to Roberts, Stiles also shared admiration for other actresses, such as Angela Bassett, with whom she worked on the 2008 film Gospel Hill. Stiles described Bassett as “regal and dignified and just strong,” reflecting her deep respect for the seasoned actress.
On a personal note, Stiles is set to make her directorial debut with the film Wish You Were Here, which will be released on January 17, marking an exciting new chapter in her career.
