
Matthew Rhys, the Emmy-winning actor, is set to star in Widow’s Bay, an Apple TV+ drama based on the Australian series of the same name. Rhys will not only play the lead role but will also serve as an executive producer for the show. The series follows the skeptical mayor of a cursed New England town, who dismisses the supernatural visions of his superstitious residents. Katie Dippold will serve as the showrunner and writer, with Hiro Murai, known for his work on Childish Gambino: This Is America and Guava Island, directing the pilot and executive producing.
The 10-episode series, which was ordered in September 2024, will delve into themes of mystery and superstition, with Rhys portraying a character who is initially dismissive of the town’s eerie occurrences. Murai, along with Claudia Shin, Carver Karaszewski, and Joanne Toll, will also be executive producers on the show.
Rhys has been a highly sought-after talent for streaming projects. Recently, he finished filming The Beast in Me, a Netflix limited series where he stars alongside Claire Danes. He will also appear in Silent River, an Amazon Prime Video thriller about a serial killer, alongside John Krasinski. Additionally, Rhys has worked on other high-profile projects like the Extrapolations climate change drama for Apple TV+ and the Towards Zero adaptation for BritBox and BBC1, based on Agatha Christie’s novel.
