Meet Ramesh: the IndiGo passenger who turned a chaiwala inside the plane

Recently, a video of a passenger on an IndiGo plane delivering tea to other passengers went viral. The man in the viral video is Ramesh, who is well-known on social media as “Indian Chaiwala,” has over 40,000 followers, and is recognised for providing tea in a variety of settings, including streets and stores.

He is well-known as “Chai Chaaiyaa” in Hyderabad’s Begumbazar, where he is renowned for his distinctive tea-serving technique, according to his Instagram bio. Similar to traditional Indian train vendors, two guys can be seen in the video distributing tea in throwaway cups as they move along the aisle of the aeroplane.

A woman sits seated, and one man serves her tea from a bottle as another helps. Online responses to the video were not entirely consistent. A user commented, “This is why foreigners are speaking bad about India… please behave,” while another asked, “Cabin crew, security wale konsa nasha karke baithe hai?”

IndiGo Airlines has not yet released a formal statement about the event. Discussions over in-flight behaviour and security procedures have been sparked by the film, which is still making the rounds.

The “Indian Chaiwala” is renowned for producing content that highlights tea service in unusual contexts with the goal of giving traditional tea vending a distinctive spin. Though not without controversy, this recent incident on an aeroplane has undoubtedly drawn attention.

The implementation of in-flight rules and airline security procedures are being questioned by many, particularly in relation to the permitting of open liquids and unapproved activities while in flight.
