Mumbai Police have arrested Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national living illegally in India under the alias Bijoy Das, for allegedly breaking into actor Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra home and attacking him and his staff during a burglary attempt. The incident left Khan seriously injured, with six stab wounds, including one near his spine. He is now recovering at Lilavati Hospital.
The police, who formed 30 teams to track the suspect, analyzed hours of CCTV footage across the city. They identified Shariful leaving the building and tracked his movements to DN Nagar, where they located his rented accommodation in Worli through local intelligence. Police found Shariful hiding in a thicket on a deserted road in Thane, where he had fled after seeing his images on TV news.
During questioning, Shariful claimed he did not know the house belonged to Saif Ali Khan and denied premeditation, stating it was his first time entering the building. Police suspect he was unemployed and targeted the home for a large robbery. Investigators discovered he used the rear staircase and air-conditioning ducts to access the property. Authorities may recreate the crime scene with the accused.
Police found no Indian documents on Shariful but uncovered evidence confirming his illegal entry into India from Bangladesh. The case highlights ongoing concerns over illegal immigration and urban security.
