Today, new updates are being introduced to help parents manage and oversee their teen’s activities on Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger. These updates consolidate parental tools within Family Center and offer parents new insights into understanding their teen’s Instagram algorithm and the topics influencing it.
The updates aim to ensure that teens’ time on Instagram is both productive and meaningful while providing parents with clear visibility into the topics and interests their teens engage with. These enhancements build upon existing protections such as Teen Accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, which feature automatic privacy settings, restrictions on who can contact teens, and tools to manage the content they encounter.
There is a growing trend of parents and teens utilizing these tools, with the number of US teens enrolled in supervision on Instagram more than doubling since last year.
Giving Parents More Insights Into the Topics Shaping Their Teen’s Algorithm
In December, Instagram introduced Your Algorithm, a feature allowing users to customize their algorithm to see more or less of certain topics. This feature, available on Reels and Explore in English-speaking countries, will soon extend to the main Feed.
Starting today, parents and guardians can access the general topics their teens engage with using the supervision tools. By expanding these insights to cover all available categories within Your Algorithm, families gain a clearer understanding of the content their teens view on Instagram.
Soon, parents in select markets will receive notifications when their teen adds a new interest to their algorithm, helping to explain changes in the content they see over time. For example, if a teen adds interests like basketball, photography, or musicals, their algorithm may adjust accordingly. Supervision provides parents with broader visibility into these general interest categories, enabling informed conversations with their teen about the content they are seeing. Parents can tap on an interest for more details to better understand their teen’s interests. This feature is available globally in English.
The interests teens can choose work alongside the existing safety protections in Teen Accounts. For instance, some content is restricted due to 13+ content protections, and topics violating Community Standards are not allowed.
The aim is to continually improve supervision tools to make life easier for busy parents while incorporating feedback from parents and experts to enhance family expectations from the apps their teens use.
Manage Your Teen’s Experience in One Place
Globally available starting today, parents of teens enrolled in supervision can manage everything from Family Center, a centralized hub to oversee their teen’s activity across Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger without switching between different apps and settings.
What’s New in Family Center
A Central Hub: All supervised accounts on Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger are now consolidated in Family Center, allowing parents to find and manage their teen’s safety settings in one place.
Simple Setup: Parents and guardians can send a single invitation to supervise their teen across these platforms, simplifying the process for families to get started.
To set up supervision, visit familycenter.meta.com/supervision. In the coming months, parents will also be able to access a comprehensive view of their teen’s activity across these apps, such as aggregated time spent. Over the next year, supervision tools will continue to expand, making it easier for parents to access controls, gain meaningful visibility, and support their teen’s experience across these platforms—all from one place.
