Robert Pattinson recently opened up about his experience playing the iconic DC superhero in The Batman, offering a candid reflection as he prepares for the sequel, The Batman Part II. In an interview with Esquire, the actor discussed the longstanding legacy of Batman, a role that has been played by many legendary actors over the years, and shared some interesting insights into his sensory connection with the character.
One standout moment from the interview was when Pattinson described the unique scent of Batman’s cowl. He explained how the leather mask, combined with the intense anxiety that comes with the role, creates a very distinct smell. “It’s leather. But it’s also a combination – because you’re sealed in a leather mask, but you’re also extremely anxious all the time. And leather is porous, so it really takes on an emotional scent,” he noted, making it clear that wearing the cowl isn’t just about the physical transformation, but also about how it connects with the character’s emotional weight.
Pattinson also shared an amusing tidbit about his audition for the role, where he had to try on cowls worn by previous Batman actors. Even after years of use, each cowl seemed to retain the distinct scent of its former wearer. When asked which cowl smelled the best, Pattinson humorously picked George Clooney’s, saying, “I think probably Clooney smelled the best.”
Although fans are eagerly awaiting news about The Batman Part II, Pattinson kept details about the sequel under wraps, speaking only vaguely about the project. When asked to describe the film in one word, he simply responded, “I haven’t seen anything yet, so I have no idea. But I think maybe… a little more iris?” leaving fans to speculate what that might mean.
Beyond his portrayal of Bruce Wayne, Pattinson is also starring in the upcoming sci-fi movie Mickey 17, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho. The Batman Part II is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027, and fans are already counting down the days for the next chapter in Pattinson’s take on the Dark Knight.
