Sophie Nelisse REACTS to Shauna And Melissa’s ‘Scary’ Kiss Scene in Yellowjackets Season 3

In Episode 2 of Yellowjackets Season 3, there’s a lot of drama, including a surprising kiss between teen Shauna, played by Sophie Nelisse, and Melissa, portrayed by Jenna Burgess. Nelisse spoke with Deadline about the scene and the complex dynamics between her character and Melissa during the premiere of the latest season.

Nelisse explained that the relationship between Shauna and Melissa is “very interesting,” and pointed out that Shauna doesn’t fully understand her own feelings. She described Shauna as being at a “crossroads,” where deep down, she craves love and someone who will tell her it’s not her “fault.” Melissa, according to Nelisse, offers Shauna that comfort by seeing her for who she truly is and accepting her, including her darker sides.

Nelisse went on to say that while Shauna feels a sense of shame for her past actions, she struggles with self-loathing and has “no love for herself.” She believes that Shauna can’t give Melissa what she needs emotionally and, instead, will likely see Melissa as just another “pawn on her chessboard.”

The actress also revealed that this season’s portrayal of Shauna is much darker. Shauna is “scary and unhinged,” Nelisse said, explaining that the character is in a place where she feels she has “nothing to lose,” especially after the tragic losses of her baby and Jackie, played by Ella Purnell. Nelisse noted that Shauna feels responsible for these losses, believing that they were her fault, which adds to her internal turmoil.

As for the group dynamic, Nelisse shared that she doesn’t think Shauna is ready to move forward from her grief. While Lottie seems to be leading the group in a way that honors the losses they’ve suffered, Shauna’s perspective is different. She’s not able to see things in that light, as her pain is so deeply personal.

Melissa, reflecting on Shauna’s experience, also commented that Shauna’s loss is “too personal of a story to be shared with everyone.” She emphasized that Shauna likely wants to grieve in private, without anyone else truly understanding the depth of her pain.
