The Flash’s Director Andy Muschietti Opens Up About Why His Movie Failed At Box Office

In 2023, The Flash marked one of the last releases of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), and despite high expectations, it didn’t perform as well at the box office. Ezra Miller starred in the film, directed by Andy Muschietti, and recently Muschietti shared his thoughts on why the movie didn’t achieve the massive success many had hoped for.

In an interview with Radio Tu’s YouTube show La Baulera del Coso, Muschietti explained that big-budget movies like The Flash, which had a production cost of $200 million, often aim to appeal to a broad audience—basically, “even your grandmother.” He added that while the film was well-received by many, some people, particularly women, didn’t connect with the character of the Flash, which might have influenced the film’s performance. Despite the mixed reception, Muschietti expressed that he was still proud of the movie.

The Flash earned $270 million globally, just slightly above its production budget, which indicates a relatively underwhelming financial performance given the expectations. The film also faced controversy due to Ezra Miller’s legal issues in 2022, where the actor was arrested multiple times in Hawaii for incidents involving public disturbances and allegations of harassment involving minors. Miller was notably absent from most of the promotional interviews but made a rare appearance at the film’s premiere.

The film’s storyline, inspired by the Flashpoint Paradox comic, saw the titular character, played by Miller, interacting with a beloved version of Batman, portrayed by Michael Keaton. However, despite these star-studded elements, The Flash was unable to replicate the kind of box-office success that many had anticipated.
