Shōgun Season 2 is officially moving forward, with co-creator Justin Marks confirming that all scripts are complete. Initially planned as a limited series, the FX historical drama—based on James Clavell’s novel—was renewed for two additional seasons after its massive success.
Speaking to Deadline at the Critics Choice Awards, Marks revealed that the writers’ room has wrapped up, and production planning is now underway. “We’re coming out of the writers’ room now. We’re also done with the 10 episodes, and we have our finale now. That’s allowing us to start figuring out how we’re going to shoot this,” he said.
While Season 1 closely followed Clavell’s novel, Season 2 will chart new territory, as there is no direct sequel. Marks teased that the upcoming season will feature unexpected twists from the very beginning. “I think the thing to take away, more than anything, is how, I hope, people are going to be surprised with some of the big ideas as soon as the first episode of Part Two,” he added.
Hiroyuki Sanada, who portrays Lord Toranaga, is confirmed to return and remains involved as a producer to ensure historical and cultural accuracy. However, FX has yet to announce which other cast members will be back.
With production planning in progress, there is no confirmed filming schedule yet. Given that Season 1 took over a year to shoot due to its detailed historical settings and practical effects, Season 2 is likely to follow a similar timeline. A release date remains uncertain, but more updates are expected as production moves forward.
