Throwback: When Kate Winslet Revealed One Common Thing She Had With Her Character in Lee

Kate Winslet has received widespread praise for her role as a war photographer in the biopic Lee, and in a throwback interview with Deadline, she shared some insights into what she has in common with her character. Winslet revealed that, much like the character Lee, she has a tendency to break the rules—something that has shaped both her personal and professional life.

When asked about Lee’s defiance of societal expectations, Winslet chuckled before responding, “I don’t know why I’m laughing. I guess I’m laughing because I feel like I’m constantly breaking rules.” She clarified that she wasn’t referring to breaking rules in a formal sense, but rather in terms of challenging societal norms.

Winslet explained, “It’s about breaking through societal norms. It’s about looking a certain way on screen that feels truthful and not airbrushed or softened just for the sake of making a film.” She added that life isn’t always “a pretty picture” and that she strives to portray authenticity, especially in her work. “For most people, it isn’t, and for me, it certainly wasn’t,” Winslet said. “I believe in telling stories truthfully, and I believed in that for this film about Lee.”

Her powerful portrayal of Lee has earned her a nomination at the Golden Globe Awards.
