Tyler Perry has expressed his outrage over insurance companies that changed their policies right before the wildfires that ravaged the greater Los Angeles area. In a powerful post on Instagram, Perry shared a heartbreaking story of a daughter trying to protect her elderly parents’ home with just a garden hose because their insurance had been canceled. He called it “gut-wrenching” and condemned the actions of insurance companies that had been profiting off communities for years only to leave them stranded when disaster struck.
“Does anyone else find it appalling that insurance companies can take billions of dollars out of communities for years and then, all of a sudden, be allowed to cancel millions of policies for the very people they became rich off?” Perry wrote. “People who have paid premiums all of their lives are left with nothing because of pure greed.”
Perry expressed frustration over the situation and pledged to find ways to help those affected by the tragedy. He also assured his followers that he is keeping everyone impacted by the wildfires in his prayers.
According to the Los Angeles Times, State Farm General, the largest home insurer in California, announced in March 2024 that it would not renew policies for 30,000 homes and condos once they expired. Of those, 16,000 were in the Pacific Palisades, one of the areas hit hardest by the fires. Other companies like Chubb and Allstate also took similar steps, halting new policies for homes in high-risk wildfire areas.
The wildfires, which began on January 7, quickly spread through the Pacific Palisades and surrounding neighborhoods, including Malibu and the Hollywood Hills, fueled by high winds. At least 16 people have lost their lives, and authorities expect that number to rise as search and rescue operations continue. The fires have scorched 37,000 acres, destroyed 12,000 structures, and forced over 150,000 people to evacuate.
