Veteran playback singer Udit Narayan has addressed the controversy surrounding a viral video in which he was seen kissing a female fan on the lips. In a candid conversation with ETimes, the 68-year-old singer defended the incident, calling it an expression of admiration from his fan. “What is wrong in it?” he asked, dismissing the backlash.
The video, which went viral on Saturday, shows Narayan performing his iconic song Tip Tip Barsa Paani at a concert. During his performance, a female fan taking a selfie with him kissed his cheek, to which the singer responded by kissing her on the lips. The undated clip has sparked debate online, with many questioning the appropriateness of the act.
Narayan linked the incident to his decades-long music career, emphasizing his contribution to Bollywood by singing for top stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan. “It is about the craze,” he said, adding, “This is an indication of popularity.” Comparing the moment to interactions seen with global pop stars, he stated, “Big singers like Michael Jackson also hug and kiss fans. What is there to make a big thing?”
Despite the controversy, Narayan remains unfazed. “I see this as a matter of pride. This has only boosted my career,” he remarked confidently. While opinions remain divided, the singer is standing by his belief that the incident was a reflection of fan admiration rather than controversy.
