
Vicky Kaushal, star of Chhaava, described the Maratha warrior as someone “who stood tall in the face of unimaginable torture” on Tuesday, the anniversary of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s passing.
In the film Chhaava, which came out last month, Vicky played the part of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The period drama, which was directed by Laxman Utekar, has made over ₹700 crore at the worldwide box office, making it the highest-grossing Hindi film of the year.

The eldest son of the Maratha Empire’s founder, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, affectionately known as Chhaava (meaning lion’s cub in Marathi). On March 11, 1689, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb put him to death at the age of thirty-one.
Production company Maddock Films is behind Chhaava, which also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna. The movie grossed ₹502.7 crore NBOC in India in 22 days after its February 14 theatrical release. The movie continues to do well at the box office. Vicky is now filming Love & War, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, starring Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor.
