As Laapataa Ladies prepares for the Oscars, Aamir Khan defends the film against claims “backward mentality of India”

Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies, which has Aamir Khan’s support, is India’s official Oscar 2025 entry in the Best International Feature category.

The celebrity responded to questions on why Academy voters like films set in rural India and whether Laapataa Ladies is propagating a retrograde view of the nation while marketing his movie. “Not all the films we make are set in villages,” Aamir stated in an interview with BBC Asian Network.

Many of our films have received international acclaim. I don’t believe that viewers around the globe still hold any significant misconceptions about India. Perhaps they believed that India was a place of snake charmers and elephants at one point. However, it is no longer the case.

“I believe that preconceptions about India are no longer prevalent, at least not to that degree.” In response to the question of whether the movie will be well received by viewers abroad, Aamir stated, “We should give them (the international audience) more credit, they’ve seen films from all over the world.”

Two young newlywed brides swap stories during a train trip to their in-laws in Laapataa Ladies, now known as Lost Ladies. Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, Nitanshi Goel, and Ravi Kishan play important parts in the Kiran Rao-directed movie.

Despite its poor box office performance, the movie eventually found a home on OTT. Director Alfonso Cuaron’s backing has given the film’s team a significant boost since they started their Academy Awards campaign, Variety reports. On December 5, the film will be screened in London with the filmmaker in attendance.
