The BAFTA nominations for 2024 certainly set the stage for an exciting awards season despite the disruptions caused by the wildfires in Los Angeles. However, it’s notable that Wicked, one of the most talked-about films of the year, was absent from the Best Film category, sparking some surprise given the buzz around its potential Oscar prospects.
The acting categories are also shaping up to be competitive, with Cynthia Erivo from Wicked and Karla Sofía Gascón from Emilia Pérez among the leading actress nominees, and Adrien Brody for The Brutalist and Ralph Fiennes for Conclave among the leading actor nominees.
In the technical categories, films like Dune: Part Two and Nosferatu are also vying for attention with multiple nominations in cinematography, editing, and special visual effects. The Best Director category is particularly notable, featuring the likes of Denis Villeneuve for Dune: Part Two and Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez.
The EE Rising Star Award is one to watch too, with emerging talents like Mikey Madison and Nabhaan Rizwan in the running.
