According to CPM leaders, Bengali film director Anik Dutta died on Wednesday in a private hospital in South Kolkata. After allegedly falling from the terrace of his wife’s house near Gariahat, he was admitted to the hospital in Dhakuria in critical condition.
Dutta is the grandson of United Bank of India founder Narendra Chandra Dutta. In 2012, he directed his first movie, Bhooter Bhabishyat. In addition, he has directed movies including Aparajito (2022), Borunbabur Bondhu (2020), and Bhooter Bhabishyat (2012). His most recent film, Joto Kando Kolkatatei (2025), stars Dulal Lahiri, Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed, and Abir Chatterjee in significant roles.
Dutta, a left-leaning filmmaker, was well-known for his criticism of Mamata Banerjee, the former chief minister of West Bengal. His movie Bhobishyoter Bhoot was not allowed to be shown in theaters in 2019. Dutta was a devoted fan of Satyajit Ray, and his works reflected Ray’s aesthetic. Ray’s works were frequently referenced in his films.
