Danny Boyle is offering a fresh perspective on the zombie genre with 28 Years Later, the highly anticipated sequel to 28 Days Later. In an interview with Empire magazine, Boyle explained that the film will explore the long-term effects of a zombie outbreak that has been contained within the UK for nearly three decades, providing a new angle for the series. The film delves into the consequences of the infection and how it has shaped Britain over 28 years, offering a different narrative approach compared to its predecessors.
The trailer for 28 Years Later caused a bit of confusion among fans, with many thinking they spotted Cillian Murphy, the original star of 28 Days Later, in a zombie role. However, Boyle confirmed that the figure was actually background actor Angus Neill. He admitted that he initially dismissed concerns from his girlfriend about the resemblance but later had to admit he was wrong, jokingly eating some humble pie over the mix-up.
While Murphy won’t appear in the sequel, producer Andrew MacDonald hinted that Murphy, who serves as an executive producer for the trilogy, might still make an appearance in future films. The movie stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, and Jack O’Connell and marks the first installment of a planned trilogy. The second film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will be directed by Nia DaCosta. The release date for 28 Years Later is set for June 20, 2025.
