David Beckham, the former football star, recently had a touching moment with his mother, Sandra, after being named a King’s Foundation Ambassador. In a heartfelt sharing, Beckham spoke about the pride and joy his family felt upon hearing the news, especially his mother, who was so overcome with emotion that she burst into tears.
Beckham, who has been involved with UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador for over two decades, was honored with the prestigious Crystal Award for his ongoing efforts to improve the lives of young children around the world.
During his speech at the 55th annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Beckham revealed that his first call after being asked by the King to join his charity was to his mum. “When the King asked me to be part of his foundation, I was very honoured. I rang my mum straight away,” Beckham shared. His mother’s emotional reaction spoke volumes, as she couldn’t hold back tears at the incredible moment. Beckham said she was deeply proud and also took the time to praise the King for his long-standing commitment to helping others.
Beckham also spoke fondly of his admiration for the British royal family, saying, “I’ve always been a huge royalist. I was brought up in a family that adored and loved everything with the Royal Family.” He particularly praised King Charles, describing him as an inspiring figure not just in recent years, but for decades. Beckham emphasized the King’s incredible dedication to various charitable causes.
As part of his speech, Beckham highlighted his deep concern for children around the world, especially young girls who face unique challenges. “Girls are held back by poverty, girls are held back by violence, girls are held back by discrimination,” he pointed out. Beckham emphasized the importance of offering girls the opportunities they deserve, calling for collective action, investment, and support for their rights and potential.
Beckham, who shares four children with wife Victoria, also mentioned his desire for his daughter, Harper, to have the same opportunities as her brothers. He ended his speech with a powerful call to action, urging everyone to continue advocating for children’s rights and striving to improve their lives across the globe.
