Diane Warren Reacts to Cher’s ‘Cheap’ Remark in New Documentary

Diane Warren has responded to Cher’s playful comments calling her “cheap” during the promotion of Warren’s documentary Diane Warren: Relentless. The film, which premiered in theaters on January 10, 2025, offers a deep dive into Warren’s illustrious career, with insights from several stars, including Cher.

Cher, who’s been a long-time friend of Warren, described her as eccentric, determined, optimistic, and kind, but also made a lighthearted joke calling her “cheap.” While acknowledging Warren’s songwriting talent, Cher mentioned that Warren’s strong personality was a driving force in their professional relationship, especially during the creation of the hit song If I Could Turn Back Time. Cher even revealed that she initially hated the song, saying, “I do not want to record this song. I hate it,” and that it took Warren’s persistence to convince her to try it. Warren humorously recalled literally holding Cher’s legs down, forcing her to at least attempt the song, which ultimately became a smash hit.

In response to Cher’s comment about her being “cheap,” Warren expressed confusion, explaining that she has always been willing to invest in her work. She specifically pointed to her decision to finance the cost of Cher recording If I Could Turn Back Time, a significant move for the iconic song.

Despite the playful back-and-forth, Cher and Warren have maintained a deep friendship over the years, with Cher even presenting Warren with an honorary Oscar in 2022. Warren, reflecting on her successful career, believes her ability to create songs that resonate with people is what has kept her relevant for so long.

For those interested in learning more about Warren’s life and career, Diane Warren: Relentless is available for streaming on MasterClass starting January 16.
