J.K. Rowling doesn’t shy away from expressing her opinions, and once again, she’s stirred the pot with her blunt remarks. This time, she spoke out regarding the sexual assault allegations against The Sandman author Neil Gaiman. Several women have come forward with accusations of sexual misconduct against Gaiman, as reported by The Wrap. New York Magazine also covered the accounts of four women who alleged that Gaiman behaved inappropriately, with accusations of boundary violations and attempts to control them in intimate situations.
In response, Rowling took to X (formerly Twitter) to draw a comparison between Gaiman and Harvey Weinstein. She tweeted, “The literary crowd that had a hell of a lot to say about Harvey Weinstein before he was convicted has been strangely muted in its response to multiple accusations against Neil Gaiman from young women who’d never met, yet—as with Weinstein—tell remarkably similar stories.” This comment ignited more debate about how the literary community has responded to the allegations.
The accusations against Gaiman first came to light when five women appeared on Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman podcast, sharing their stories. The New York Magazine article then detailed the accounts of four women who alleged that Gaiman had boundary issues, with some claiming that he exerted control over them in ways that led to intimate situations.
As the allegations against him gain more attention, Gaiman’s work seems to be facing consequences. Prime Video had already been preparing for the third season of Good Omens, but following the allegations, plans for the show’s 90-minute finale appear to have stalled. Additionally, Disney has reportedly paused its adaptation of Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book.
The controversy continues to develop, with many questioning how the allegations against Gaiman are being handled in comparison to the response to other high-profile cases.
