Christian Oliver, well known for his appearances in films like Speed Racer and Valkyrie, passed away alongside his two young daughters on Thursday after their small plane crashed into the coast of a Caribbean island, according to Deadline. Oliver was 51 years old. The plane’s owner and pilot, Robert Sachs, was also killed in the crash.
The single-engine aircraft took off from J.F. Mitchell Airport in Bequia, a small island in the Caribbean nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and crashed on the way to neighbouring St Lucia on Thursday afternoon, authorities said. Among the dead were Oliver’s daughters, Madita, 12, and Annik, 10.
“Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft experienced difficulties and nose-dived into the ocean,” the Royal St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force stated in a statement to media outlets. “Fishermen and divers from Paget Farm went to the scene of the incident in their boats to render assistance.”
Officials said all four bodies have been recovered. The investigation into the crash’s cause is still ongoing. Shortly after takeoff, the pilot radioed the tower to indicate that he was having problems and would be returning, according to local reports. That was the last transmission from the aircraft.
Oliver had recently wrapped up shooting the last scenes for his latest picture, Forever Hold Your Peace, helmed by Nick Lyon and co-starring Bai Ling.
