Taylor Swift’s debut album, Taylor Swift, and her 2017 smash album Reputation mysteriously disappeared from Spotify, sending her fanbase, known as the Swifties, into a frenzy. Many took this as a hint that Taylor might soon be releasing new versions of these albums, similar to what she’s done with her past work. The excitement grew when she teased Reputation: Taylor’s Version. Fans got an extra boost of speculation when Taylor made a bold appearance at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, wearing a yellow and black plaid outfit paired with long, leather fingerless gloves and thigh-high boots, which many saw as a nod to her Reputation era.
This re-release of Reputation is highly anticipated, as it’s one of the most eagerly awaited albums since Taylor began re-recording her old music. She started with Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) in 2021, followed by Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) and 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in 2023. Fans are especially keen to hear the re-recorded Reputation because it holds a special place in Swiftie history, with its iconic sound and lyrics.
The timing of the album’s disappearance on Spotify also seems to line up with the 2025 Grammys. Swift is a nominee this year, and she’s known for making major announcements during her acceptance speeches. It’s possible that she’ll use the event to reveal the re-release of Reputation and even her debut album.
In fact, she pulled off a similar surprise last year when she announced the release date of her secret album The Tortured Poet’s Department during her acceptance speech at the Music Academy Awards. This was a big shock to fans, especially since she had been on her Eras Tour for what felt like forever.
When speaking to Time magazine about her re-recorded albums, Taylor compared the process to “collecting horcruxes” from the Harry Potter series, referring to the magical objects that held pieces of a dark wizard’s soul. She also likened it to collecting “infinity stones” from the Avengers films, saying, “Gandalf’s voice is in my head every time I put out a new one.” To her, it’s become more than just music – it’s like a movie, a larger narrative unfolding.
This year, Taylor is up for several major Grammy awards, including Best Album, Best Song, Record of the Year, Pop Vocal Album, Best Music Video, and even Pop Duo/Group Performance for her collaboration with Gracie Abrams on the song Us. With all of this in the mix, Swifties are eagerly awaiting any new developments!
