The Village People, the legendary disco group behind the iconic song Y.M.C.A., has announced that they will perform at several events during President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration celebrations. This includes at least one performance alongside Trump himself.
Victor Willis, the band’s lead singer, made the announcement via Facebook, stating that while their decision may not sit well with everyone, they believe in the power of music to transcend politics. “Our song ‘Y.M.C.A.’ is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost,” Willis wrote. The band emphasized that their involvement was not about endorsing any political view but about the unifying role of music.
One of the events the band is scheduled to perform at is an inaugural eve ball hosted by Turning Point USA, a conservative activist group, where notable figures such as Vice President-elect JD Vance, Donald Trump Jr., and Tulsi Gabbard will be present.
This announcement is significant for the Village People, as they have long been associated with LGBTQ+ pride, and their songs, especially Y.M.C.A., have been embraced as symbols of gay culture. However, the band clarified that they do not view Y.M.C.A. as a “gay anthem” but rather as a universal anthem of inclusivity.
While their participation in the inauguration may raise some eyebrows, the Village People have made it clear that their involvement is about promoting unity through music, not political affiliation. It remains to be seen whether they will perform at any of the more high-profile, official inauguration events.
